Participation

October 2010 is the fourth time Cinetrip announces the international VJ tournament in Budapest.

The biennial international visual challenge is an outstanding opportunity for inspiring today’s applied visual artists, animating the VJ community and allowing them a focused introduction, as well as entertaining not only those especially interested in digital arts, but also the broad public.

The Cinetrip VJ Tournament starts on 18 October with workshops from beginner to advanced, providing an insight into the various fields of the VJ profession, from an overview of the history of digital art through software demonstrations in practice. The competition itself will take place from Thursday till Friday night in three categories, with DJ-VJ parties each night. On the closing party, the most talented VJs will introduce themselves in Merlin in a real life party environment.

Detailed program and conditions for application are soon to be found at www.cinetrip.hu/vjtorna.

CALL FOR COMPETITION

October 2010 is the fourth time the international VJ tournament is announced by Cinetrip, founder of the award.

The biennial international visual challenge is an outstanding opportunity for inspiring today’s applied visual artists, animating the VJ community and allowing them a focused introduction, as well as entertaining not only those especially interested in digital arts, but also the broad public.

The competition takes place from Wednesday till Friday in 3 categories, with an international jury. A novelty this year is that there are suggested themes for the competitors to compile their sets from. The closing event will also be extraordinary: the winners will have an opportunity to do their magic at a usual Cinetrip sparty this fall, in one of Budapest’s thermal spas.

NOVELTIES

Suggested themes, individual contestants, new scoring system.

We would like to guide the preparation for the competition by proposing themes. Although these are not compulsory, we are really interested in your visual reflections on the following subjects:

●      Culinaria – foods and lives

●      The Daily Grind – man at work

●      Happy Space Age – soaring out into the Universe

Another novelty is that only individuals can apply this time. If you work in a team, you can only take part in the competition in your own name, and may not accept any outside aid from the rest of your team during the Tournament competitions.

The third change is the scoring method for the VJ Champion category. Contestants will not be screened out in a customary knockout tournament system! From now on, the jury will give scores from 1-10 to everyone throughout the qualifying rounds, and based on their total scores, the 4 best contestants make it into the semi-finals and then to the final. These final two stages of the competition will again be knockout rounds to increase the thrill before the finish line, where we draw one on one until the last one standing brings home the trophy.

COMPETITION CATEGORIES

1. MOST BEAUTIFUL VJ OPUS (online)

We are expecting ready-made VJ compilations edited to music, maximum length 12 minutes. Teams can also enter in this category. To apply, first you need to fill out the application form on the VJ Tournament website. We only accept applications in Vimeo video format. All you need to do is register at the Vimeo sharing site, upload your video in the VJ Tournament group and submit your link with the application. Works are admitted into the festival program following preliminary assessment by the jury.

The winner will be the compilation voted best by the festival’s audience from the ones that passed the preliminary jury. Voting will take place in advance, and will involve videos published online.

2. VJ CHAMPION (live)

If you like entering live competitions, this category is made for you! Bring your gadgets and show us how you VJ!

According to the new rules, from this year, only individuals can compete in this category.

The winner will be the live show of a maximum duration of 8 minutes judged best by the festival’s jury. The competing piece may be an AV set or a live mix to music brought by the contestant.

(If you have no music to bring and feel comfortable doing experimental gigs, we can provide a DJ on location.)

To apply, you need to fill out the application form on the VJ tournament website.

3. VJ CHALLENGE CHAMPION (live)

The challenge is a contest of true courage: there is no preparation, and you cannot rely on your long matured resources! You get random raw material from the organizers by luck of the draw, 60 minutes before the start of the challenge. This is what you will have to make the most of, to randomly selected music! VJs will demonstrate their technical skills and creativity live before the audience and the jury in a 6-minute duel.

This is a knockout category, and the jury selects the qualifying contestants from each two VJs paired by drawing. Only one will survive the challenge!

According the new rules, from this year, only individuals can compete in this category.

To apply, you need to fill out the application form on the VJ tournament website.
